Lilies of the field

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moths and rust destroys and thieves break in and steal. Matthew 6:19

Jesus did not want people to worry about earning enough money or having fine clothes or owning beautiful things.

"Don't collect treasures here on earth," he said. "Robbers can break into your house and can steal money or your things. Moths eat holes in your fine clothes. Rust can ruin things. Instead, collect treasures in heaven. Nothing can spoil them there. You see, your heart will be where your treasure is!"

Some people who listened to Jesus worried about having enough food to eat or clothes to wear. He reminded them that the birds don't plant seed or cut grain, but that their Creator feeds them.

"Think about the wild lilies in the field," he said. "They don't work. They don't sew clothes. But they are more beautiful than King Solomon in his finest robes! If God takes care of the flowers and the birds, don't you think God will take care of you, too!"

"Your God knows what you need," Jesus said. Start thinking about God's kingdom first. Then everything you will need will come to you."
