The Coming of the Wise Men

Where is he that is born of the Jews? For We have seen his star in the east, and have come to worship him.  Matt. 2:2

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the days when Herod was king, some wise men came to Jerusalem from a country far away.

"Where is the child who is the new king of Jerusalem?" they asked. "We saw his star. We have come to worship Him."

King Herod who was cruel and wicked, heard about these men. He asked all the priests and the teachers of the law, "Where will the messiah be born?"

So Herod secretly sent for the wise men. "Go to Bethlehem," he said. "Search all around, when you find the child, come back and tell me, so that I can go worship him, too."

And so the wise men left for Jerusalem. Suddenly they saw the star again and were very joyful. They followed the star until it came to rest over the place where Jesus was. They went in and found the baby Jesus with His mother Mary. They bowed low and worshipped him. They brought him presents of gold and frankincense and myrrh.

God told the wise men in a dream not to go back to the king. So instead of returning to King Herod to tell him about the baby, they went home another way.
