The Road to Emmaus

And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem. Luke 24: 13-35

On that day Jesus rose from the dead, two of His friends walked to a small town called Emmaus.

It was about seven miles from Jerusalem. As they walked along, their faces gloomy, they talked about everything that had happened. Suddenly Jesus Himself joined them. "What are you talking about?" Jesus asked them.

One of them, named Cleopas, asked, "Are you the only person in the country that hasn't heard? Jesus, our Teacher, was a great prophet. He did many miracles. We had hoped that He was the Messiah, the Christ, that would save Israel. But last Friday He was crucified.  We were shocked when some of our women found His tomb empty. The women had even said that they had seen angels who told them that Jesus was alive. Some disciples went to His tomb and found it empty, too. Now we don't know what to think!"

"How foolish you are!" said Jesus. "Don't you know the prophets taught that these things would happen to the Christ, the Messiah?"

As they were walking, He talked about the law of Israel and the prophets, and what they said about Him.

The two friends still didn't know this was Jesus. When they got to Emmaus, they begged Him to eat with them. At the table He thanked God for the bread, broke it, and gave it to them. Suddenly, they knew it was Jesus. But the next minute He disappeared.

Then they asked each other, "Wasn't it like a fire burning in us when He talked to us on the  road?"

The two rushed back to Jerusalem. "We have seen the Lord!" they said.
